With the political system at national and local level clearly broken, it's time for working people to seize the initiative and draw up their own proposals to make things work in their interests.

That's the purpose of this Saturday's fifth Croydon Assembly. Our aim is to draw up a People's Plan for Croydon that puts people in charge of the key decisions and to take that out into the local communities.

We are excluded and effectively disenfranchised - by Croydon Council, NHS bureaucrats, train companies and, naturally, by central government.

Take Brexit. All the Tories plan to do is listen to big business and the banks. Our voice counts for nothing and that's what we have to change if we are to achieve a democracy that counts for something.

So, if you haven't yet registered for the Assembly, please do so by following this linkhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/wanted-a-peoples-plan-for-croydon-tickets-28605834822 and share it with your contacts.

For more news of the Assembly please link to:

    Attached is flyer.

Hope to see you on Saturday.

Despite his repeated claims that he will fight for St Helier Hospital, according to this article, Member of Parliament for Carshalton and Wallington, (in which St Helier stands), Tom Brake, has apparently written to the current Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt in support of the dangerous plans of the Epsom & St Helier Trust to remove Acute services from ONE OR BOTH of Epsom Hospital And St Helier Hospital.

Tom Brake has arranged a public meeting to discuss the future of local hospital services, and we think as many people as possible should come along to let Mr Brake know exactly what they think of these dangerous plans, and indeed ask him how his support for this scheme can possibly be described as fighting for the future of St Helier Hospital.

This meeting, like the one organised by MP for neighbouring Sutton and Cheam will feature the Epsom & St Helier Trust Chief Executive and champion of this terrible plan, Daniel Elkeles as a speaker.

We have no doubt that the number of people attending these meetings will be counted by the Trust, and later used as evidence of the Trust's 'engagement' activities.

It is therefore essential, that the Trust are left in no doubt that the general public DO NOT WANT to have our two local hospitals downgraded from the Acute hospitals that they currently are. And we do not want our Acute facilities cut from the two which we currently have, and which are located where we need them, down to just one site, located further away from most people.

It is also important that MPs & Local Councillors are made aware that if they allow this to happen, we will not vote them back into power.

The event is to take place on Thursday the 31st August from 7pm at Strawberry Lodge, Mill Lane, in Carshalton, SM5 2NQ - please do come along and make your feelings known.

Local charity, "Healthwatch Sutton" who apparently exist to protect the interests of local people in terms of healthcare, have published this piece which seems to offer no challenge to the assertions made by the Epsom & St Helier Trust, and invites people to come along to a public meeting on Tuesday the 5th of September at 4:30pm, at Carshalton Beeches Baptist Church, Banstead Road, SM5 3NL.

Like the meetings organised by local MPs, Tom Brake and Paul Scully, this one will feature the Epsom & St Helier Trust Chief Executive and champion of this terrible plan, Daniel Elkeles as a speaker.

We have no doubt that the number of people attending these meetings will be counted by the Trust, and later used as evidence of the Trust's 'engagement' activities.

Paul Scully has already voiced his enthusiastic support for the plan to remove acute services from our two closest hospitals, and replace them with only ONE acute facility. He has also said that his preference would be for this to be located on or adjacent to what's left of the former Sutton Hospital site (next to the Royal Marsden).

He is holding a meeting, which, like the meetings arranged by both Tom Brake, and Healthwatch Sutton, feature the Epsom & St Helier Trust Chief Executive and champion of this terrible plan, Daniel Elkeles as a speaker.

"The six Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) in South West London (Croydon, Kingston, Merton, Richmond, Sutton and Wandsworth) have agreed to establish a ‘Committees in Common’ to make decisions as a group of CCGs together. The effective commissioning of health care sometimes needs decisions to be made for populations larger than a single CCG.

Although the venue has not yet been announced for this important meeting, we would urge you all to come along, as it is likely that important matters including the future of healthcare in our area will be under discussion. Please check the following links for details:

Merton, Sutton & Surrey Downs Clinical Commissioning Groups are planning to remove all acute services from Epsom hospital and St Helier hospital, possibly as soon as 2020.

This would mean the removal of A&E, Maternity, Paediatrics, Emergency Surgery, Intensive Care, Emergency Medicine, Cancer Care & Coronary Care.

They say that they would *like* to then build a new single "acute facility" to replace the two which we currently enjoy.

Local NHS Bosses have a plan which would see BOTH Epsom hospital and St Helier hospitals downgraded.

Both of our local major Acute hospitals would lose their Acute services, such as A&E, Maternity, Paediatrics, Intensive Care, Cancer Care, Coronary Care & Emergency Surgery, possibly as soon as next year (2020). They say that they would like to provide a SINGLE "Acute Facility" (not a hospital) in their place.

Such a new facility would be located further away from most people.
The new facility would be staffed by fewer consultants.
The new facility would have fewer Acute beds than we currently have in Epsom hospital and St Helier hospital.
